Book Summary:

Emma Chase, New York Times bestselling author of the Tangled series, returns with a funny, romantic, sexy story! A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight. When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand. Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be. Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I’m going to Mommy and Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal’s office. Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids. And that—that, I know how to do.

Book Summary:

Belize’s tourism sector has witnessed impressive growth in recent years with overnight tourist arrivals registering double digit annual growth rates since 2016. To guide the development of the tourism sector from 2012 to 2030, the government endorsed a National Sustainable Tourism Master Plan in 2011, setting various initiatives and targets for the immediate and medium terms. Using a panel regression analysis on twelve Caribbean countries, this paper finds that accelerating structural reforms, fortifying governance frameworks, reducing crime, and mitigating the impact of natural disasters will help sustain tourism growth in Belize and contribute to economic well-being. This is in addition to tackling infrastructure bottlenecks and mitigating concerns relating to the “shared economy”.

Book Summary:

This book speaks to the daily realities of anyone –regardless of race, color, origin, culture, belief, social strata, and gender- anyone who dares call him/herself “human”. The thoughtprovoking question here is, what does one do when the nightfall lingers with no daybreak in sight; when stubborn affl iction becomes his/her fl anking companion, day in and day out? I truly believe in the redemptive and mystical power of suff ering. It is, in essence, that inner agony, which has not only inspired this book, but also personifi ed the invisible and excruciating pain, by giving it a face which can be seen and touched, a voice which can be heard, and an emotion which can be felt. Exposure to trials of all kinds, which one endures with steadfast courage, produces, at the end, resiliency and strong character. Walsh (2006) stated “Resiliency can be defi ned as the capacity to rebound from adversity strengthened and more resourceful. It is an active process of endurance, self-righting, and growth in response to crisis and challenge”. Resilient people demonstrate an uncommon ability to manage positively common life’s daily transactions. They exhibit exemplary courage and determination when confronted with traumatic events such as death, divorce, life-threatening illness, disaster, social injustice, racism and discrimination, etc. One’s belief plays a crucial role in the manner, which he/she approaches life’s stressful demands, daily responsibilities, and ongoing challenges.

Book Summary:

Cathy Suitor Riley decided to write this book during her treatments for bi-lateral breast cancer. It seemed to help to put her experiences on paper and she was hoping that her story would inspire and strengthen anyone that was going through any type of trial, not just breast cancer. It is obvious throughout this book that God was ever present during her journey and carried her when she couldn't carry herself. The faith that Cathy was taught during her childhood from the two Christian parents she was blessed with is what made all the difference in her life. She knows that without those teachings and lessons in faith she may have given up from the very first day of her diagnosis. Cathy had always said she didn't see how any woman could go through breast cancer because she would have to give up her hair and breasts, the two main things that make a woman feel feminine. It is obvious now that the way a woman gets through this is from the strength given to her by God. Only God can carry any of us through the trials we will face in this life, and there will always be trials as long as we live on this earth. It is this authors hope that this book will give you strength, hope, faith and the knowledge that your God is always with you and He is waiting for you to seek Him and depend on Him for everything. He is as close as our next breath and He is our very best friend. Always draw near to God and He will carry you through all things of this world.... May God bless you as you read and meditate on this book!

Book Summary:

In today’s competitive environment, it’s no longer enough to satisfy your customers. To sustain success, you must meet the needs and expectations of all relevant interested parties of your organization. The journey is a process in which those needs and expectations are inputs, and sustained success is the output. To transform the inputs into sustained success, the organization must establish and implement the right processes. This represents ‘what’ must be done. The organization also must ensure that it has the behaviors and competences needed to maintain these processes, representing ‘how’ things should be done. This book covers both the ‘what’ and ‘how’ aspects of achieving sustained success and is a guide for top managers ready to embark on this journey. The chapters serve as a sequential checklist that elaborates on the key elements of the process, with each element building on the next as readers are guided through their journey.

A Game Sustained: The impact of the First World War on cricket in Yorkshire 1914-20

  • File Pdf: a-game-sustained.pdf

Book Summary:

Over two million British men were injured or killed in the First World War. Millions more people supported the war effort at home – in factories, fields or by keeping essential services going. In these circumstances, how could something as trivial as cricket continue? For some, it was not acceptable; for others, watching or playing sport were reasonable responses to government calls to ‘carry on’. A Game Sustained examines what happened to cricket at all levels in Yorkshire between 1914 and 1918; how it kept going with so many men away; how its top league managed to attract players such as Hobbs, Barnes and Woolley; and how, when peace came, cricket resumed its place in county life in 1919 and 1920. It is a story of divided opinions and of guilt and uncertainty about the correct way to behave. It is also the story of efforts to sustain traditions and to keep some sense of normality at a time of crisis.

Book Summary:

Practical advice for redesigning “big, old” companies for digital success, with examples from Amazon, BNY Mellon, LEGO, Philips, USAA, and many other global organizations. Most established companies have deployed such digital technologies as the cloud, mobile apps, the internet of things, and artificial intelligence. But few established companies are designed for digital. This book offers an essential guide for retooling organizations for digital success. In the digital economy, rapid pace of change in technology capabilities and customer desires means that business strategy must be fluid. As a result, the authors explain, business design has become a critical management responsibility. Effective business design enables a company to quickly pivot in response to new competitive threats and opportunities. Most leaders today, however, rely on organizational structure to implement strategy, unaware that structure inhibits, rather than enables, agility. In companies that are designed for digital, people, processes, data, and technology are synchronized to identify and deliver innovative customer solutions—and redefine strategy. Digital design, not strategy, is what separates winners from losers in the digital economy. Designed for Digital offers practical advice on digital transformation, with examples that include Amazon, BNY Mellon, DBS Bank, LEGO, Philips, Schneider Electric, USAA, and many other global organizations. Drawing on five years of research and in-depth case studies, the book is an essential guide for companies that want to disrupt rather than be disrupted in the new digital landscape. Book Summary:

The positive social benefits of low unemployment are many—it helps to reduce poverty and crime and fosters more stable families and communities. Yet conventional wisdom—born of the stagflation of the 1970s—holds that sustained low unemployment rates run the risk of triggering inflation. The last five years of the 1990s—in which unemployment plummeted and inflation remained low—called this conventional wisdom into question. The Roaring Nineties provides a thorough review of the exceptional economic performance of the late 1990s and asks whether it was due to a lucky combination of economic circumstances or whether the new economy has somehow wrought a lasting change in the inflation-safe rate of unemployment. Led by distinguished economists Alan Krueger and Robert Solow, a roster of twenty-six respected economic experts analyzes the micro- and macroeconomic factors that led to the unexpected coupling of low unemployment and low inflation. The more macroeconomically oriented chapters clearly point to a reduction in the inflation-safe rate of unemployment. Laurence Ball and Robert Moffitt see the slow adjustment of workers' wage aspirations in the wake of rising productivity as a key factor in keeping inflation at bay. And Alan Blinder and Janet Yellen credit sound monetary policy by the Federal Reserve Board with making the best of fortunate circumstances, such as lower energy costs, a strong dollar, and a booming stock market. Other chapters in The Roaring Nineties examine how the interaction between macroeconomic and labor market conditions helped sustain high employment growth and low inflation. Giuseppe Bertola, Francine Blau, and Lawrence M. Kahn demonstrate how greater flexibility in the U.S. labor market generated more jobs in this country than in Europe, but at the expense of greater earnings inequality. David Ellwood examines the burgeoning shortage of skilled workers, and suggests policies—such as tax credits for businesses that provide on-the-job-training—to address the problem. And James Hines, Hilary Hoynes, and Alan Krueger elaborate the benefits of sustained low unemployment, including budget surpluses that can finance public infrastructure and social welfare benefits—a perspective often lost in the concern over higher inflation rates. While none of these analyses promise that the good times of the 1990s will last forever, The Roaring Nineties provides a unique analysis of recent economic history, demonstrating how the nation capitalized on a lucky confluence of economic factors, helping to create the longest peacetime boom in American history. Book Summary:

During the last three decades there have been enormous advances in our understanding of the neural mechanisms of selective attention at the network as well as the cellular level. The Oxford Handbook of Attention brings together the different research areas that constitute contemporary attention research into one comprehensive and authoritative volume. In 40 chapters, it covers the most important aspects of attention research from the areas of cognitive psychology, neuropsychology, human and animal neuroscience, and computational modelling. The book is divided into six main sections. Following an introduction from Michael Posner, The Oxford Handbook of Attention begins by looking at theoretical models of attention. The next two sections are dedicated to spatial attention and non-spatial attention respectively. Within section 4, the authors consider the interactions between attention and other psychological domains. The last two sections focus on attention related disorders and on computational models of attention. A final epilogue chapter written by Nobre and Kastner summarizes the questions, methods, findings, and emerging principles of contemporary attention research. For both scholars and students, The Oxford Handbook of Attention provides a concise and state-of-the-art review of the current literature in this field.

Raised by his merciless father—a self-proclaimed king—Cole and his brothers were key players in his father's plan to annihilate their adversaries. The family’s loyalty is tested when Cole brings a mysterious stranger named Arna into their lives. With this new addition to their world—danger follows her—as secrets unfurl around them. Book Summary:

This work represents a publishing event in education research. Genuinely groundbreaking, it is the result of longitudinal research from five nations over five years. The authors set themselves an unprecedented task: to analyze how it is that successful school principals sustain positive outcomes over a significant period of time. To find out, they initiated the International Successful School Principal Project (ISSPP) assembling 30 multinational case histories and numerous comparative analyses. In doing so, they recorded fresh perspectives on the influence school principals can have on their schools, the quality of teaching in their classrooms, and student outcomes. Revisiting the subject schools in 2007, they found many principals still in place, having steered their organizations through various minefields of political, governance and educational reform. As the most penetrating longitudinal investigation of the subject, this research has unearthed fascinating new insights into school leadership that add real substance to the sum of our knowledge. It incorporates data from educational systems in Australia, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, England and the USA. One key finding is that while all principals delegate a range of leadership tasks, successful ones distribute responsibility on a case-by-case basis founded on personal assessments of their staff as well as on organizational and policy contexts. The research also demonstrates that successful principals maintain close communication with their staff and the wider school environment, and that they are adaptive, maximizing the opportunities presented by new political contexts and expectations, yet without losing sight of their school’s core moral and ethical principles. The volume’s international thematic analysis has allowed comparative conclusions to be drawn on what the principals do to sustain and foster pedagogical and institutional success.
