Book Summary:

In this book, David Baily Harned makes a persuasive case for the significance of patience as an essential ingredient of the moral life. In a bold and invigorating manner, the author addresses contemporary existence--the lives of individuals, families, communities, and nations--and demonstrates how the Christian vision informs our efforts to live in a chaotic and violent world as faithful, hopeful, loving children of God. This essay in theological ethics is rooted in classic texts: the Old and New Testaments, as well as the writings of Augustine, Gregory I, Thomas Aquinas, Thomas a Kempis, John Calvin, Soren Kierkegaard, and W. H. Vanstone. In graceful prose and through careful analysis, David Harned both inspires and instructs. This new edition also includes an afterword by one of his former students who explores the value of this study by applying its insights to the life and leadership of George Washington.

Book Summary:

"As founder and guiding teacher of the Community Meditation Center in New York, Allan Lokos has an arsenal of tools for coping with stressful situations." - Rachel Lee Harris, New York Times To survive the roller-coaster ride of life, with its ever-changing shifts from pleasure to pain, gain to loss, and praise to blame, requires a substantial depth of patience. In this life-changing book, Allan Lokos sheds new light on this much-sought-after state of mind, and provides a road map for cultivating greater patience in one's life. According to Lokos, to develop a depth of patience we must first acknowledge the unhappiness caused by our impatience and anger in its many manifestations-from mild annoyance to rage. In this revelatory book, Lokos draws on his many years as a Buddhist practitioner and spiritual teacher, as well as interviews with a wide range of individuals who have had their patience tested-often dramatically so-and lays out a compelling path to the heart of patience."

Book Summary:

This work deals with the closely-related topics of patience and gratitude. As is shown in the book, patience and gratitude are two sides of the same coin, closely-related attitudes which the Muslim should seek to foster in every aspect of his or her life. This kind of spiritual advice is something that today's Muslims so desperately need. Far from being a set of empty rituals and nit-picking legal technicalities, or a set of words to be repeated or chanted ad nauseam, Islam is a holistic way of life: if it is applied only partially, imbalance will result. A most important aspect of Islam, which must always accompany the formal "rituals" and the recitation of du'as and dhikr, is constant remembrance of Allah and constant contact with the Divine. Developing a truly Islamic attitude of patience will enable us to do this. We believe that Islam has the answer to many of the psychological problems that trouble mankind today, such as anxiety, depression, lack of confidence, addictions, etc. This book will, Insha'Allah, bring the spiritual and psychological benefits of our Islamic heritage to Muslims who do not have access to the works of the scholars in the original Arabic. This book has been written to highlight the urgent need for patience, and to explain that our happiness in this life and our salvation in the Hereafter depends on patience. This book is filled with benefits and readers will benefit from its advice and teachings. What is good and correct in this book is by the help of Allah, and what is mistaken in it is from the Shaytan. May Allah forgive us. Allah is the Greatest Helper, and we put our trust in Him. Book Summary:

The women referred to are Mrs. John H. Curran, wife of the former Immigration Commissioner of Missouri, and Mrs. Emily Grant Hutchings, wife of the Secretary of the Tower Grove Park Board in St. Louis, both ladies of culture and refinement. Mrs. Curran is a young woman of nervous temperament, bright, vivacious, ready of speech. She has a taste for literature, but is not a writer, and has never attempted to write anything more ambitious than a personal letter. Mrs. Hutchings, on the other hand, is a professional writer of skill, and it was to her quick appreciation of the quality of the communications that the starting of the record is due. It was soon apparent, however, that it was Mrs. Curran who was the sole agent of transmission; for the communications came only when she was at the board, and it mattered not who else sat with her. During the first months only Mrs. Curran and Mrs. Hutchings sat, but gradually the circle widened, and others assisted Mrs. Curran. Sometimes as many as five or six would sit with her in the course of an evening. Mr. Curran has acted as amanuensis, and recorded the communications at most of the sittings, Mrs. Curran’s mother, Mrs. Mary E. Pollard, occasionally taking his place. The ouija board is a rectangular piece of wood about 16 inches wide by 24 inches in length and half an inch thick. Upon it the letters of the alphabet are arranged in two concentric arcs, with the ten numerals below, and the words “Yes” and “No” at the upper corners. The planchette, or pointer, is a thin, heart-shaped piece of wood provided with three legs, upon which it moves about upon the board, its point indicating the letters of the words it is spelling. Two persons are necessary for its operation. They place the tips of their fingers lightly upon the pointer and wait. Perhaps it moves; perhaps it does not. Sometimes it moves aimlessly about the board, spelling nothing; sometimes it spells words, but is unable to form a sentence; but often it responds readily enough to the impulses which control it, and even answers questions intelligibly, occasionally in a way that excites the wonder and even the awe of those about it. Its powers have been attributed by some to supernatural influence, by others to subconsciousness, but science has looked upon it with disdain, as, until recent years, science has looked upon nearly all unprecedented phenomena. Mr. W. T. Carrington, an eminent English investigator of psychical phenomena, in an exhaustive work upon the subject, has this to say of the ouija board: “Granting for the sake of argument that the board is moved by the sitter, either consciously or unconsciously, the great and vital question still remains: What is the intelligence behind the board, that directs the phenomena? Whoever sets out to give a final and decisive answer to this question in the present state of our knowledge will have his task cut out for him, and I wish him happiness in the undertaking. Personally I am attempting nothing of the kind.”

Find Joy in a Busy World by Practicing Patience “This book is a true gift to the world. It's insightful and full of calm, helpful wisdom.” —Richard Carlson, author of Don't Sweat the Small Stuff Bestselling author M.J. Ryan details just what living with patience can bring to our lives and how it can change us for the better. Take a deeper look at an old-fashioned quality. We’ve all heard the phrase, “Patience is a virtue,” and doubtless responded with a sigh, as usually it’s spoken with a tone of reproach. But this virtue carries with it a wealth of wisdom that can actually help us find happiness in our day-to-day life. Slow the rush. Things move at a quick pace in our society, in both our work lives and social lives. Not only are we forced to keep up, but we have been conditioned to expect instant gratification. Because of this, we find ourselves getting flustered by the smallest setbacks or hold ups―whether it’s a slow server at a restaurant or rush-hour traffic. Ryan shares how patience is the very antidote to the stress of our fast-paced lifestyle. Reclaim your priorities. By reining in our aggravation when things don’t happen instantaneously, we give ourselves time to breathe and think more clearly. We make better use of our days and allow ourselves to make decisions based on how they align with our priorities, instead of focusing on how fast we can get tasks done. With M.J. Ryan’s help, we can learn to foster a patient outlook and find joy and fulfillment in the present moment. M.J. Ryan’s book is a fulfilling and beneficial self-care gift for women and men that provides: • Straightforward, believable instructions for developing a habit of patience • A source of stress-relief and guide to happier living • Ways to find peaceful moments amidst the hustle and bustle that each day brings Readers of Present Over Perfect, When Less Becomes More, The Joy of Missing Out, or Stillness is Key will love M.J. Book Summary:

The Study of Patience is the seventy-eighth instalment in the Little Blue Book Series and comprises the third and fourth discourses of the Tetradoxy, which is itself the fourth disquisition of the Omnidoxy, the founding book of Astronism. The first part of this publication explores the concept of patience from an Astronist philosophical perspective with subsequent impacts on the Astronist ethical system while the second part of the publication addresses a long series of familial, relational, and friendship-oriented topics and issues as approached from an Astronist perspective. The Little Blue Book Series was created and first published by Cometan himself as a way to simplify and commercialise the immensity of the two million word length of the Omnidoxy into smaller, more bite-size publications. A successful series from its very first published entry, the Little Blue Book Series has gone on to become a symbol of Astronist commercial literature and a way for Cometan’s words to reach readers of all ages and abilities who remain daunted by the beauty and yet the sheer extensiveness of the Omnidoxy as the longest religious text in history.

Book Summary:

Life’s been hard for Zeke. Being a punching bag for his alcoholic father has turned him into stone. Not even the dodgy trailer park he lives in can scare him. Fighting is his release and sex, drugs, and his guitar bring him peace, but deep down Zeke isn’t quite as hard as he makes himself out to be. When he meets Patience, she finds all his broken pieces and puts him back together, but she’s a ray of light in his shadowed life and the last thing he wants to do is bring her into his dark world. Playing careless is easy, playing the bad guy can be fun, but playing Patience is impossible, especially when she can see right through him. Zeke isn’t the only one who’s broken, and for the first time, in a long time, Patience feels alive. Her black and white world gets a shot of color when she meets Zeke. He’s unlike anyone she’s ever met with his tattoos, piercings, and blunt honesty. She wants nothing more than to let go and ride the wild side with him, but some wounds never heal and the broken pieces of Patience aren’t so easy to find.

Book Summary:

Success in the christian race aside salvation is made possible by acquiring/developing and manifesting virtues like patience. I mean patience with God, oneself and other people. According to the author, life is worth living if lived in patient principles and eternal damnation can be avoided, walking through life in patience. Patience is perseverance, endurance, forebearance, ability to wait a little or stay action for a moment so to achieve desired results. Patience is a fruit of the Spirit as love, joy, peace, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. These are interdependent for a fruitful Christian life. There are really no shortcuts in life. Between every initiative and the product is the process that demands patience. This occurs in different shades and several experiences dotted throughout scriptures. It is noteworthy, that the pains and calamity of impatience far outways the rewards of patience! This is a critical choice that has to be made. I am richly blessed by this timely piece and do recommend it to every serious minded Christian willing to have a quality and productive life here on earth and make heaven seamlessly. Dr. Mike Omale Author, Researcher and Pastor This book will give you the right view on patience and its application in this modern generation of impatient people. Patience Cavanaugh has lost hope in romance. The man she yearned to marry is dead and her dreams are gone with him. Now she is consumed with the restoration of a dilapidated boarding house in order to support herself. Despite her desire for solitude, Jedediah Jones, the local sheriff with a reputation for hanging criminals, becomes an ever-looming part of her life. It seems like such a simple arrangement: Patience needs someone with a strong back to help her fix up the boardinghouse, and Jedediah needs a dependable source of food for himself and his prisoners. But Patience gets more than she bargained for as she explores the depths of the "hanging lawman"--and finds both betrayal and love. With a keen eye to historical detail and a deft hand at romantic tension, Maggie Brendan invites readers to a Montana gold rush boomtown, where vices and virtues are on full display and love is lying in wait.

Book Summary:

The violence, confl icts, senseless wars, divorces and many other evil activities against each other globally is the lack of patience. The world is facing such atrocities and wickedness because of selfishness, greed, then also people are not ready to understand each other. This small book exposes some of the weaknesses that fi ght against our patience and some strengths which can enhance our patience. It is a book for all who are ready to notice how our impatience can destroy good intentions and also how we can build a society who are ready to embrace each other regardless of colour, religion, age, or sex. Even though the book targets Christians, I should think that politicians, statesmen, married couples, legal institutions and other stakeholders can largely benefi t from reading it.

Book Summary:

In this potent collage of stories, essays, and testimony, Williams makes a stirring case for the preservation of America’s Redrock Wilderness in the canyon country of southern Utah. As passionate as she is persuasive, Williams, the beloved author of Refuge, is one of the country’s most eloquent and imaginative writers. The desert is her blood. Here she writes lyrically about the desert’s power and vulnerability, describing wonders that range from an ancient Puebloan sash of macaw feathers found in Canyonlands National Park to the desert tortoise–an animal that can “teach us the slow art of revolutionary patience” as it extends our notion of kinship with all life. She examines the civil war being waged in the West today over public and private uses of land–an issue that divides even her own family. With grace, humor, and compassionate intelligence, Williams reminds us that the preservation of wildness is not simply a political process but a spiritual one.

Book Summary:

In this quirky, romantic novel, in the irreverent spirit of Christopher Moore’s national bestseller Lamb, a young woman is getting texts from an iPhone-obsessed God, and she’s not okay with that. Her handsome new neighbor tries to intervene in the dispute, but is he on her side, or the Almighty’s? Patience Kelleher doesn’t want to be a soldier of the Lord. She doesn’t want His voice in her head, and she certainly doesn’t want Him texting her emoticon-laden messages about boy band singers and sinister solar power corporations. What would a cranky, twenty-three-year-old waitress know about preventing the Apocalypse? He’s got believers for that sort of thing, or the Army. All Patience wants is to keep a job she actually likes, and to avoid falling for her confounding new neighbor, if at all possible. When the Lord enlists said neighbor to convince her to step up, it doesn’t brighten her mood. That was dirty pool. Zane Grey Ellison doesn’t particularly want to be a soldier of the Lord either, but he’s keeping an open mind. His world’s been pretty skewed since he abandoned his father’s estate, and his preoccupation with the waitress across the street hasn’t helped him regain his equilibrium. The messages she’s receiving from a text-happy God don’t seem all that much more wondrous to him than his discovery of diner food, or the realization that not every girl in the world can be impressed by a Bugatti Veyron. In fact, if Patience would just stop bickering with the Lord for a minute, he believes they might even get the job done. Patience fights to keep her sanity as Zane fights to keep the peace, determined not to let the world die…not when it’s just getting good.

Book Summary:

“Without patience truth and steadfast logic of exalted school of religion wouldn’t have been understood. Divine learning of Islam, which blessed humanity, would have lost its color with the passage of time. Ultimate hope of victory of truth over falsehood, which provides life-giving fresh blood for the powerful hands and steadfast steps of believers, would have been silenced forever. Without patience existence of Monotheism, prophet-hood, and prophetic mission would haven’t been possible and produced any fruits. Rights of deprived people couldn’t have been obtained from the tyrants. Also, prayers, fasting, and other deeds would have lost their meanings. During his limited span of life in this world, a human being between his birth and death is a traveler on the road towards final destination. He has been fundamentally created to endeavor as much as possible to bring himself close to final destination. The primary aim of divine religions and great prophets was to build an Islamic society providing a suitable field in which human beings could travel, ultimately reaching their desired goal.” *** “The present book contains a detailed commentary about the philosophy of daily ritual prayer in Islam. The writer describes Prayer of Islam like a siren for awakening us; a warning at different hours of day and night which provides a program for human beings, requiring their commitment for its execution. Thus, it bestows meanings to spent days and nights and makes them accountable for passing moments. Prayer of Islam by inspiration and repetition of God’s remembrance connects limited vulnerable human beings to infinite and absolute source of power and thus, makes him rely upon that supreme source. Book Summary:

Preface by the Monk Coen. ”In this book, Pedro Costa makes an important analysis - an anamnesis of altered states of consciousness, and gives us guidelines, recipes, suggestions so that we can perceive our moods and develop the ability to deal with them. We will need patience a lot - in order to have physical, mental and social health. We can identify the enemies of patience. Not only we can, but we should. Let us define them as the main causes of our daily unrest. First, the people. Second, time. Third, the situations. The fourth can be understood as the union of the first three: chaos, or ”people with no time in difficult situations”. Normally, when we lose patience completely we fall into this last stage of impatience. It's this combination of factors that disturbs our peace. In this book, we describe a method so you always remember the ”good allies” of patience. A way to improve your life. It's the ”4S” rule, a shortcut to memorizing it. Thus, the four allies of patience are: Silence, Sight, Smile and Sure. Easy, right? We'll go into detail about this method and each of the four allies as well as the enemies of a complete change to a better life. We must also observe that the more we focus on the present, the more likely we are to find the allies of patience. The authors P. COSTA and G. COSTA bring a two-fold vision from different areas. First a broad approach of patience by medical science, linked to mindfulness, and on the other hand an approach by anthropology, closely related to the totality of the human being, including all of its dimensions. Book Summary:

Many of us are impatient; the responsibilities and hardships of life seem to try our patience at every turn. And sometimes, it’s the little things that make us snap. However, scripture tells us that “God is faithful, and he will not let you be tested beyond your strength, but with the testing he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to endure it” (1 Corinthians 10:13). With those wise and hopeful words in mind, Growing in Patience presents positive, productive, and spiritual ways to deal with impatience. After all, patience must be nurtured. It is a virtue we must prayerfully ask for from God and then—by God’s grace—seek to put into practice each day.

Book Summary:

Love, Patience and Understanding - Words from the Heart helps us cope with many aspects in life that are unpredictable. Love teaches us to appreciate and value our family and friends while they are here with us. Life is short and we never want to have everlasting regrets once our loved one is no longer with us. We do not want to go through life asking, Why didn't I do that, or why wasn't I there to help when they were in need? Why was I too busy? In Patience we are taught to remain calm in many situations. Dealing with an aged parent, a crying child or a job that we dislike, can be very taxing on us. I find that when we are at the end of the rope, it is better to count to three, take a deep breath and exercise patience. Hopefully, by practicing this exercise the lack of patience will diminish. There may be times when we should do this exercise more than once a day. When we are patient, life around us seems much easier on everyone near and far. With Understanding we realize we are not the only one who has troubles or heartaches. To ask a question such as Why? and never receive an answer is very puzzling. Such a small word, yet so powerful never knowing the answer. The reader will gain insight of how we should count our blessings, appreciate our family and friends and never look back on what could have been. Look forward to tomorrow. A bright smile, a compliment and words of kindness, along with the soft touch of a kiss will bring comfort and peace to all.
