Book Summary:

At Kadena Air Force Base on Okinawa, Angus and sixty-two other young Marines stand at the tail of the huge airplane, a Hercules, that will take them on the last leg of their journey to Southeast Asia. The flight has been held up for about twenty minutes for a late arrival. When the man finally shows up, Angus is startled by his appearance. He's wearing faded, frayed fatigues, carrying an old green canvas bag in one hand, and a long, leather case in the other. He wears a strip of camouflaged cloth tied around his head, and pulled down level with the top of his eyebrows. His hair is long, almost reaching his shoulders. While Angus stands there gawking, all the young Marines walk up the ramp past him. Before Angus realizes it, he is standing there alone, the last passenger to climb aboard. There were a few vacant seats left, but he decides to sit next to this late arriver. It might prove to be interesting. Next stop, Viet-Nam.

Book Summary:

The JCT standard forms of building contract require a thorough understanding of their procedural requirements, as well as their legal implications. They require both the contractor and the architect, on behalf of the employer, to send a wide range of notices and letters if each party is to protect its legitimate interests. The main contract forms are also supported by complex sub-contract documentation. Therefore, it is not surprising that when this book of specimen letters, notices and forms was first published, it was widely welcomed by the construction industry. The book provides examples of documentation likely to be required for a contract under the following JCT forms: ? the Standard Form of Building Contract ? the Intermediate Form of Building Contract ? the Agreement for Minor Building Works ? the Standard Form of Building Contract With Contractor's Design It includes a commentary on the practical implications of the various documents and highlights the points to be watched. The new edition takes into account the wide range of amendments to the latest editions of the standard forms following the Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act 1996, and in particular, the new payment and adjudication provisions. For the first time it features documentation for use with the JCT design and build form.

The Good Daughters—A spellbinding novel about friendship, family secrets, and the strange, unexpected twists of fate that shape our lives. The story of two women born the same day in the same hospital, but raised in vastly different emotional environments, The Good Daughters is another high note in Maynard's already distinguished writing career. After Her—Loosely inspired by the Trailside Killer case, After Her is part thriller, part love story—a suspenseful and painfully real family saga that traces a young girl's first sexual explorations, the loss of innocence, the bond shared by sisters, and the tender but damaged relationship between a girl and her father that endures even beyond the grave.

Book Summary:

“WE NEED TO TALK.” In this urgent and insightful book, public radio journalist Celeste Headlee shows us how to bridge what divides us--by having real conversations BASED ON THE TED TALK WITH OVER 10 MILLION VIEWS NPR's Best Books of 2017 Winner of the 2017 Silver Nautilus Award in Relationships & Communication “We Need to Talk is an important read for a conversationally-challenged, disconnected age. Headlee is a talented, honest storyteller, and her advice has helped me become a better spouse, friend, and mother.” (Jessica Lahey, author of New York Times bestseller The Gift of Failure) Today most of us communicate from behind electronic screens, and studies show that Americans feel less connected and more divided than ever before. The blame for some of this disconnect can be attributed to our political landscape, but the erosion of our conversational skills as a society lies with us as individuals. And the only way forward, says Headlee, is to start talking to each other. In We Need to Talk, she outlines the strategies that have made her a better conversationalist—and offers simple tools that can improve anyone’s communication. For example: BE THERE OR GO ELSEWHERE. Human beings are incapable of multitasking, and this is especially true of tasks that involve language. Think you can type up a few emails while on a business call, or hold a conversation with your child while texting your spouse? Think again. CHECK YOUR BIAS. The belief that your intelligence protects you from erroneous assumptions can end up making you more vulnerable to them. We all have blind spots that affect the way we view others. Check your bias before you judge someone else. HIDE YOUR PHONE. Don’t just put down your phone, put it away. New research suggests that the mere presence of a cell phone can negatively impact the quality of a conversation. Whether you’re struggling to communicate with your kid’s teacher at school, an employee at work, or the people you love the most—Headlee offers smart strategies that can help us all have conversations that matter.

Book Summary:

The chorus of frightening voices began to cackle maniacally and chanted in a strange language. Diana picked up the fruit but dropped it when it burned her hand to the touch. To Greta’s horror, an upside-down cross was beginning to sear into the palm of Diana’s hand. Her eyes were solid white before she crumpled to the ground. “AHHH... FRESH MEAT, SO SWEET. WE’LL MAKE THE GODDESS PURR... PURR... PURR!” sniggered the evil being in a cacophony of guttural sounds. It took all the courage inside Greta to leap onto the levitated bed. While she struggled with the entity possessing her teammate, she was amazingly able to force the blood amulet over the demon’s neck. In that instant, the bed slammed to the ground. Diana sat up looking quite dazed as well. Greta inspected them before breaking her silence. “Are you both okay?” Shade was sobbing. “What happened? Why am I tied up? Please untie me. I’m so scared.” Diana was about to release Shade, but Greta immediately grew concerned. She wisely chose to keep it to herself because Diana still had the telling mark on her hand. In his own words, Buffett is just a regular guy who likes fast food, honest work, and people he can trust. Throw in incredible instincts, a genius for numbers, meticulous research, and an almost sure-fire investment philosophy, and you begin to understand how he's become a legend in his own time. With just a few thousands of dollars from relatives and friends, and by taking calculated risks with small companies and staying with them, he managed, almost single-handedly, to turn Salomon Brothers around. Giants like Disney, American Express, McDonald's, Gillette, and Coca-Cola have all been affected by Buffett's magic touch, and he owns a chunk of all of them. By thirty-one, BUffett had already made himself a millionaire, and he's worked his way steadily toward the top of the Forbes list. Here is a fascinating portrait of Warren Buffett, known for his investigating genius, his sense of humor, and his mean turn of a phrase. It's an amazing story of a man who carved his own path through American business by doing his homework, backing companies he believed in, and growing rich on their success-a story that will show you that opportunity abounds for anyone willing to go for it.

Now a major motion picture from Lionsgate starring Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson, and Naomi Watts. MORE THAN SEVEN YEARS ON THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER LIST The perennially bestselling, extraordinary, one-of-a-kind, “nothing short of spectacular” (Entertainment Weekly) memoir from one of the world’s most gifted storytellers. The Glass Castle is a remarkable memoir of resilience and redemption, and a revelatory look into a family at once deeply dysfunctional and uniquely vibrant. When sober, Jeannette’s brilliant and charismatic father captured his children’s imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and how to embrace life fearlessly. But when he drank, he was dishonest and destructive. Her mother was a free spirit who abhorred the idea of domesticity and didn’t want the responsibility of raising a family. The Walls children learned to take care of themselves. They fed, clothed, and protected one another, and eventually found their way to New York. Their parents followed them, choosing to be homeless even as their children prospered. The Glass Castle is truly astonishing—a memoir permeated by the intense love of a peculiar but loyal family.

Book Summary:

Upheaval. Flight. Terror. Insecurity. Milan Voticky and his family faced all of this when the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1939 forced them to escape to Shanghai. Liberated from the Shanghai ghetto in 1945, the Voticky family made their way back to Prague, only to find themselves fleeing Czechoslovakia once again — this time from the Communists. When they finally found permanent refuge as in Canada, Milan swore that would refuse to see himself as a victim. He would seize every possible opportunity. In this, he finds common cause with the Dreamers, the 1,800,000 undocumented children of illegal immigrants in the USA who are covered by DACA. “As a two-time refugee from oppression and death,” Voticky writes, “I can understand the Dreamers’ fear of being sent to a country and culture that they don’t know or understand, where the language is one they do not speak, where they have no family or friends.” In addition to being the remarkable story of a remarkable man, Dreamers Refuse to Be Victims is a call to all those fleeing injustice to take charge of their own futures.

Book Summary:

This is the forth book in this series that began with an in-depth look at how God views details, communicates with this world, and decides what process to use. Of course this series of books looked at aspects recorded in scripture about the Tabernacle. How the materials were collected, specific design details, who did the work, and how the Tabernacle was constructed. Much of that information is found in dozens, maybe hundreds of other books about the Tabernacle. But there are details setting this book apart from every other book written about the Tabernacle. This book takes a verse by verse, story by story, chapter by chapter look at the Tabernacle. In other words, this book presents a picture of the Tabernacle from God's point of view. Which the beginning of this series pointed out, is much different than any human perspective.
